"Glynn's Gaze" is a retrofuturistic assemblage that merges past and present through a reimagined 125-year-old opera glass.

The antique lenses, now replaced by Edison bulbs, symbolize the shift from traditional observation to an illuminated, introspective reflection. Modern blue cold cathode tubes in place of the eyepieces evoke a futuristic perception of reality.

I found an antique postcard from 1909 with the musical actress Gertrude Glynn holding the same opera glasses in her hand - this connected the past and present and inspired me to the title of the work "Glynn's Gaze".

Materials:

  • Opera glasses manufactured around 1900 by Ernst Loewe in Zittau / Saxony / Germany
  • original leather quiver of the opera glasses
  • cast iron handwheel as a base
  • Edison incandescent light bulbs
  • Bakelite lamp sockets
  • blue cold cathode fluorescent tubes (CCFL)
  • Borosilicate glass tubes
  •  dimmer, high voltage CCFL inverter, power supply and power switch
