Retrofuturistic Assemblage

30cm

"Flux"  bridges the analog past and the digital present, transforming a 1950s dictation machine into a symbol of perpetual change.

By replacing the magnetic tape reels with looping LED bands that cycle through colors, the work suggests that while technology evolves, the essence of recording, remembering, and replaying remains constant.

The title "Flux" aptly captures the idea of time's unending flow and the cyclical nature of transformation. The shifting lights reflect the continuous yet repetitive rhythm of progress, reminding us that change is both inevitable and recurrent.

This retrofuturistic assemblage questions whether progress truly moves forward or simply loops in evolving forms.

Materials:

  • Dictation machine "Stenorette", manufactured by Grundig in the year 1954
  • Programmable neon LED strip
  • LED filaments for interior illumination
  • Laptop stand

Additional information

  • Stenorette by Grundig was one of the first dictation machines for professional use in offices. The price in 1954 was 296 DM - the equivalent of around 900 Euros today.
  • Steno is the german translation of shorthand, a abbreviated symbolic writing method mainly used in secretariats until the 1980s. Shorthand writing was replaced quickly by ever smaller dictation machines.
  • At 5kg, the Stenorette is not easy to handle, but it is robust.
